The Fincastle Chapter is pleased to announce that it has raised nearly $17,000 towards the $21,000 needed to conserve the Botetourt Dragoons Flag in the collection of the Museum of the Confederacy in Richmond, VA. Grants, individual donations, and corporation sponsorships have contributed to this effort. With only a few thousand dollars more to go, the Chapter eagerly looks forward to the conservation of this silk flag and its exhibition at the Appomattox Branch of the MOC.  To make a donation, visit https://acwm.org/flag-conservation.

IMG_0331Members of the Fincastle Chapter 797 attended the Virginia Division’s 120th Annual Convention in Harrisonburg, September 24 through 27. Hosted by the Second District, the convention was attended by over 190 UDC members and guests. The convention’s theme was “Women of Courage: Keepers of Confederate Heritage.”

On Friday evening, Military Service Awards were bestowed upon members of the Armed Services for their roles in World War II, the Global War on Terror, and as members of the Armed Forces Expeditionary Service. Lt. Col. Jonathan White, US Army (ret.), presented the evening’s program “Southern Women: Memorializing the Valiant and the Fallen.”

This year’s Memorial Service included a wreath laying ceremony at Harrisonburg’s Woodbine Cemetery.

President’s Evening was a festive event with awards presented to member chapters and recognition of contributions made by individuals. Fincastle salutes our neighboring Daughters of the Sara Rice Pryor Chapter 2347 for winning the Alice Whitley Jones Banner for the best historical project relating to the Confederate era. The members of the Pryor Chapter worked for five years to erect a monument in Cedar Hill Cemetery in Covington that identifies 70 Confederate veterans buried there. Congratulations!

Elections on Sunday resulted in the following new Division Officers:

President: Eleanor P. Price

Second Vice President: Ginger Stephens

Registrar: Rebecca Ferguson

Historian: Rhonda Fleming Smith

Recorder of Military Service Awards: Dawn Diehl

Custodian: Liz Shifflett

President-elect Price dutifully appointed Teresa Roane as Corresponding Secretary.

The members of the Fincastle Chapter are grateful to all of the Division Officers for their past service. We are particularly proud of our Past President Suzie Snyder, who fulfilled the office with grace during the past two years. Many thanks to those who have served and will serve!IMG_2790IMG_0302IMG_0305
