On Saturday, July 11, 2015, the Fincastle Chapter held an Iron Cross Dedication ceremony for Rufus Harrison Peck. Peck, a Fincastle native, who fought with the Botetourt Dragoons, which became Co C 2nd VA Cavalry. After the war, Peck retained the Botetourt Dragoons flag, which the ladies of Fincastle presented to the unit as they marched off to war. Peck donated the flag in 1907 to the Museum of the Confederacy in Richmond. Today, the Fincastle Chapter is raising funds to conserve that flag.

The ceremony included greetings from the Chapter President, Harriett Francis, a poetry reading by Registrar Loretta Caldwell, and a dedication by Virginia Division President Suzie Snyder. The ceremony was made even more special by the presence of several family members who spoke about their Peck ancestry and the influence it has had on them.

Ladies from the Fincastle Chapter and the Jubal Early Chapter attended the ceremony in period dress. Colors were presented by the Co C 2nd VA Cavalry re-enactors and included the inaugural debut of the replica Botetourt Dragoons flag, which was lovingly painted by chapter member Cindee Garst Hensley. Mrs. Lynn Reed, President of the Hamilton Wade Chapter UDC, once again graciously assisted the Fincastle Chapter and led the assembly in song. Music was provided by bagpiper Mr. Burt Mitchell and “Taps” was played by James River High School graduate Miss Elizabeth Hess. Miss Emma Francis served as guest book attendee and Master Nicholas Lee assisted in the unveiling of the cross.

The Fincastle Chapter is grateful to all who travelled great distances to join us on this special day.
