AMAZING RAISE boosts Flag Fund

September 29, 2014

Amazing Raise

The Amazing Raise has finished for this year and with the help of our generous donors, The American Civil War Museum/Museum of the Confederacy raised more than $8,400 toward our goal of conserving the flag of the Botetourt Dragoons, Company C of the 2nd Virginia Cavalry.

We are currently at $15,718.93 raised in total for the flag’s conservation goal of $21,000. A big thank you to all those who generously donated during the Amazing Raise, we wouldn’t be this close to conservation without you!

The Fincastle Chapter would also like to thank the museum staff for including our project in this effort and for their continued enthusiasm and support!

Donations may be made directly to the Museum of the Confederacy at

The Fincastle Chapter is pleased and honored to announce that the American Civil War Museum/Museum of the Confederacy has chosen the Botetourt Dragoons flag as the beneficiary of this year’s Amazing Raise 36-hour online fundraising event. We hope that supporters will visit the fundraising web site during this campaign (6 a.m. Sept 17 to 6 p.m. Sept 18) and help us to reach our goal of $10,000.

The museum sent out the following press release today:ACWM

An amazing thing happens in Richmond each fall: The Amazing Raise.

Sponsored by our local community foundation, this annual fundraising event raises more than $1.0 million in less than two days to support area non-profits such as The American Civil War Museum. While many non-profits rely on year-round giving, this event presented a great philosophy – why wait, when you can do it today? Last year, members and friends of The Museum of the Confederacy generated almost $10,000 during this marathon event. Thank you!

This year’s event is dedicated to the hard-working ladies of the Fincastle Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy and their effort to raise funds to conserve the 2nd Virginia Cavalry, Company C, “Botetourt Dragoons” battle flag. This silk flag was hand painted and signed by artist Alfred Jones and presented to Company C of the 2nd Virginia Cavalry of the Confederate States Army in May of 1861 by the ladies of Fincastle. The oil painted Dragoons flag was used for two years in active battle before being sent home.

This one-of-a-kind flag was presented to the Museum in 1907 by a gentleman who fought under its banner. Emblazoned with both the Virginia state motto and seal and the immortal words of Patrick Henry, this flag deserves careful conservation and continued preservation. You can be a part of ensuring this important piece of American Civil War history carries on. Our goal is to raise $10,000 during this two-day fundraising event.

As a token of our appreciation to our loyal members and donors, we will be offering a wide variety of door prizes throughout this inspirational event.  Gifts of $100 and above will be entered into a special raffle to win a commemorative White House of the Confederacy plate.
