On July 12, members of the Fincastle Chapter presented a posthumous Military Service Award to Corporal Leon W. Buchanan, who served in Co. A, 534th Amphibian Tractor Battalion in the Pacific Theatre during World War II. The award was received by his widow, Delma Buchanan of Charlottesville.

Cpl. Buchanan was a descendant of William W. Buchanan, who served as a private in Co. I, 5th VA Infantry during the War Between the States. In May 1943 at Camp Lee in Petersburg, Cpl. Buchanan left his studies at Washington & Lee to enlist in the U.S. Army and served for two years. He┬áreceived an honorable┬ádischarge in January 1946 at Fort Bragg, NC. Among Cpl. Buchanan’s awards and citations were the Asiatic Service Medal with one bronze service star; the Philippine Liberation Service Medal; a Good Conduct Medal; a Bronze Arrowhead; and a Victory Medal.


The award ceremony was held at the Fincastle Public Library. Donna DiMurro, Recorder of Military Service led the ritual and President Harriett Francis presented the award.
