Visit to Abingdon

March 17, 2014

IMG_3529On March 8, 2014, members and friends of the Fincastle Chapter visited Abingdon in beautiful Washington County. The group enjoyed a wonderful lunch at a local restaurant, visited the Confederate Memorial in front of the county courthouse, and attended a performance at the Barter Theatre. The group looks forward to visiting friends in Southwest Virginia in April at the First District Conference in Wytheville.

In February, the Fincastle Chapter received a $1,000 donation from the Military Order of the Stars and Bars (MOS&B)  for the conservation of the Botetourt Dragoons flag. The flag is in the collections of the Museum of the Confederacy in Richmond. The Fincastle Chapter is undertaking fundraising efforts to conserve the 1861 silk flag. The donation from the MOS&B is greatly appreciated and illustrates the wide-ranging appeal of this important project. In his letter to the chapter, Lt. Commander General William Howard Jones stated “We are very impressed with your efforts to preserve the Battle Flag. In so doing, you are preserving an important part of our history and our heritage.”

IMG_3567Debra A. McClane, project chair, delivered the check to Cathy Wright, curator at the Museum of the Confederacy.

The Fincastle Chapter thanks the MOS&B for its generosity and also thanks all those who have donated to this project.
